In an effort to alleviate some of the pain and suffering still reverberating from a Northern California wildfire that erupted earlier this month, a couple of medical marijuana dispensaries are offering free medicine to those patients affected by the blaze.
According to the LA Times, two marijuana businesses—Care By Design and AbsoluteXtracts—are providing patients with up to $200 in complimentary cannabis for the next week. The participating companies represent five dispensaries spanning several areas, including San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Sebastopol and a delivery option in Lake County.
In order to qualify for free weed, residents must show eligibility for the state’s medical marijuana program and live among the communities most devastated by the fire that has incinerated nearly 120 square miles over the course of the past few weeks.
The companies have set aside $20,000 of marijuana products to donate to victims of the fire. Patients meeting the criteria may take advantage of the offer from now until October 7.
“Thousands of residents were forced to evacuate their homes, leaving them with restricted access to essential daily items—including medical marijuana,” the dispensaries said in a joint statement. “This disaster happened in our own backyard. As a company that prides itself on putting patient needs first, we felt there was no better time to reach out and help our neighbors in their time of need.”
Although the Valley inferno is reportedly contained for the most part, it is being called one of the most brutal blazes in California history. In some areas, hundreds of homes have been destroyed, with several people either killed or injured, not to mention tens of thousands of acreage completely gone up in flames.
Unfortunately, while some of the victims have been permitted to return home, many are finding that looters have ransacked their houses. We certainly hope the free weed, not to mention the kindness of other community outreach efforts, facilitates in getting these people back on their feet very soon.
