Reduce Exposure to GMO Foods

In many of today’s commercial food stores and restaurants in the U.S., almost 80% of all food is processed, packaged, irradiated, pasteurized, homogenized or refined to such a degree, that almost all nutrient content is completely wiped out, leaving you eating empty calories that provide no lasting nutritional benefit for your body and immune system.

The natural foods which are whole foods, however, are jammed packed with nutrition that is hard to come by in a commercial grocery store — even Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, which were thought to be far superior quality foods, are not free of GMOs (genetically modified organisms), yet many of these food products are sold to their loyal customers.

But what’s even more troubling about GMOs is this: back in the mid 1990’s, the American food supply was systematically hijacked by a biotech and pesticide company which quietly snuck GMOs into our food supply. Every single person across the U.S. was an unknowing participant in an experiment, an experiment which is still taking place to this day, since there are no label requirements for GMOs in the U.S.

How could this happen without our knowledge?

In 1994, the company Monsanto,  introduced Bt Corn, Soy and other genetically modified foods and were given a green light by the FDA, whose own researchers at the time warned them that GMOs were unsafe – but they released these known “unsafe” foods onto the U.S. food supply anyway.

Despite documented proof of the results of a recent long term study of GMOs by a team of researchers and scientists that tested these “novel” foods over the course of two years, they found that these types of mutated foods were damaging to the health of their test subjects which were laboratory rats.

You may have heard of that particular study by Dr. Seralini on GMOs, which by the way, was the exact same study and used the exact type of rats that Monsanto used in their own study prior to seeking approval of GMOs — the only two differences between the two was that Monsanto’s study was only for 90 days, while the Seralini study was for two years.

What the Seralini surprisingly found was that the rats didn’t show any remarkable findings before the 90 day mark. However, the researchers discovered that after the 90 period, showed the lab rats fed these GMO foods, cancer, tumors, immune disorders, sterility and premature death occurred in 80% of the rats. Ask yourself this: if this happens in rats, what do you think GMOs are doing to us?

Could it be that Monsanto knew of this period of time where the rats didn’t show any signs of abnormalities, and why they didn’t show the FDA of their findings past the 90 day mark? We’ll never know, because Monsanto’s own researchers who found the abnormalities in the rats who were fed GMOs, were oddly all released from their contracts after their findings, and signed a nondisclosure agreement, in essence silencing any potential dissent.

Many proponents of GMOs, and even the journal that the Seralini study was published in, redacted the study, a full year after it was submitted, claiming it was invalid. Interestingly, that journal went against its own protocols and guidelines and pulled the study from their catalog, which had never been done before in its history.

Unfortunately the vote didn’t sway in favor of labeling GMOs, because there was a barrage of financial influence from these chemical companies that don’t want you to know what’s in the food you eat. They spent almost $50 million against your right to know about what’s in your food.  By simply putting a label that states foods that are GM, these chemical and food companies fear most people wouldn’t want to buy GMO foods and would in effect, lose money — and they would be correct! Of course, who in their right mind would want to consume a GMO food knowing the potential health risk?

This is where natural foods must come into play

Given the statistics that the food that you are eating, unless verified Non-GMO or 100% organic, it’s most likely a GMO food — foods that are USDA organic, too, do not require that GM foods are tested. In fact, it can still contain a small percentage of GMOs, so be sure the label says 100% organic.

So, if you’re trying to avoid GMOs by eating organic, the reality is, that it’s almost impossible to avoid them. This is, unless you grow your own food. But in a practical sense, almost all Americans have been brought up not learning how to grow their own food, thus, we are constantly being bombarded by non-nutritious, unhealthy, and what research has now confirmed in rats fed GMOs, to be incredibly harmful to other animals that were fed GMO corn and other feed, died within days of eating these mutated foods.

It’s not a coincidence that the increase numbers of cancer, autoimmune diseases (allergies), digestive disorders and other adverse ailments and diseases have increased dramatically, up to 400% in some cases, since the unknowing introduction of GMOs wound up in our food supply.

What you can do to avoid GMOs

Since we’re not given the opportunity by the food industry and our own government to know if GMOs are in our food with a simple label, it’s up to each of us to find creative ways in which to avoid these nasty buggers.

  • Find your local Farmer’s Market and do most of your shopping there. Many even have dairy and real organic items that you wouldn’t otherwise find in a commercial food store, and that’s a very good thing to discover. Have you ever been at a grocery store and was able to cut your own herbs, pick your own spinach or ask the farmer that grew the food if they used herbicides or pesticides? Likely most people haven’t had that opportunity — unless they shop at a Farmer’s Market. You are not only getting the most nutritious food for your dollar, because that food hasn’t traveled thousands of miles to get to market, but you’re supporting your community by supporting farmers.   • Buy food labeled 100% organic. The U.S. and Canadian governments do not allow manufacturers to label something 100% organic if that food has been genetically modified or been fed genetically modified feed. However, you may find that organic food is more expensive and different in appearance from conventional products. Again, just because something says “organic” on it does not mean that it does not contain GMs. In fact, it can still contain GMOs if it’s certified USDA Organic, so be sure the labels say 100% organic.
  • Trusted Organic Certification institutions include QAI, Oregon Tilth, and CCOF. Look for their mark of approval on the label of the product. USDA Organic standards pale in comparison, so keep this in mind when you see a product that doesn’t state that it’s 100% organic if it is only USDA Organic Certified. This applies to eggs, as well. Eggs labeled “free-range”, “natural”, or “cage-free” are not necessarily GE-free, so look for eggs that are 100% organic.
  • Buy whole foods. Favor foods that you can cook and prepare yourself, rather than foods that are processed or prepared (e.g. anything that comes in a box or a bag, including fast food). What you lose in convenience, you may recover in money saved and satisfaction gained, as well as increased peace of mind. Try cooking a meal from scratch once or twice a week if you don’t already–you may enjoy it and decide to do it more often.
