By Scott Milton — This July 4th, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters will come together for the Moms Across America March to Label GMOs, taking place in more than 100 cities nationwide.
I invite you to join us.
While public awareness of genetically modified foods is growing, many Americans still haven’t heard much about GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).
Nonetheless, GMO food has been silently taking over supermarket shelves. In fact, about 70% of the food in stores is now genetically modified, and according to the USDA, 88% of all corn and 93% of all soybeans grown in the U.S. in 2012 was genetically modified.
So what’s all the fuss?
Well, it turns out that genetically modified food is not very good for our health. In fact, some scientific studies have linked genetically modified food to liver and kidney damage, cancer, and birth defects. One recent study showed that genetically modified corn is toxic to blood and bone marrow. Do you really want to feed this stuff to your family?
GMOs are leading to higher levels of pesticides and herbicides in our food. Some crops are even genetically engineered to produce their own pesticide, which means the pesticide is actually inside every bite of the food and cannot be washed off. GM corn and soy plants are actually registered as insecticides, but these plants are not regulated and they have not been tested for safety by the FDA.
Scientific studies from Europe and Russia show that rats fed genetically modified food die prematurely, yet food producers here in the U.S. continue to put this in our food and on our supermarket shelves–even in baby formula.
The European Union, Russia, China, and over sixty countries have already enacted laws to label or restrict genetically modified foods, and in a 2012 national poll, 91% of Americans said they wanted GMOs labeled.
Unfortunately for consumers, biotech companies and food producers have spent vast sums of money to defeat state-level ballot measures like California’s Prop 37 that would have put a label on GMOs. These corporations want to keep the American public in the dark about genetically modified foods because they know that once GMOs are labeled, many consumers will simply avoid them.
I am marching for our kids, and I hope you will join us for this important march. Whether you’re a mother, father, son, or daughter, your participation will help raise public awareness of genetically modified food and demonstrate to our elected officials that we care about our food and want mandatory labeling of GMOs so we can make informed decisions about what we are buying and feeding our families.
Together we can make a difference! Already, 19 U.S. states have passed laws restricting GMOs, and in 2013 at least 37 GMO labeling bills have been introduced in 21 U.S. states, with more to follow.
Spread the word! Tell your friends and family. Talk to your neighbors and grocers.
This 4th of July let’s celebrate our nation’s freedom by affirming our freedom to choose whether or not we want to eat GMOs. Americans deserve the right to know what’s in our food.
Let freedom ring!
