With 23 states adopting some sort of legalization for marijuana, many other states are looking to jump on that bandwagon and bring this natural drug to the forefront of issues that concern them the most.
The frenzy of supporters are growing at a rapid pace, especially across the southeastern part of the U.S. who want medical marijuana legalized for medicinal purposes. These supporters are rallying on behalf of patients who are chronically ill, and the right for doctors and patients to make the decision whether they should have access to this medicine. To most who are in this fight, it’s not about getting high, it’s about offering compassion for people who need it the most — people with debilitating ailments and diseases.
As new bills are introduced in these states, they offer an opportunity for the most chronically ill to receive from their doctor, the kind of natural medicine that works for them, which has shown to treat many diseases such as cancer, HIV, epilepsy, crohn’s disease, and others.
United for Care drafted a new proposed bill last year, and this year yet again are trying to put a new bill on the ballot for 2016. They need close to a million people to sign their petition to get it submitted to the Florida legislature in Tallahassee.
There is also a new medical marijuana bill which was drafted and filed January 26th, 2015 by St. Petersburg Sen. Jeff Brandes, a 28-page piece of legislation, the most far-reaching of its kind by a top legislative leader, seeking to regulate the cultivation, distribution and use of medical marijuana in Florida.
We should allow for physicians and patients to make decisions about their medical care,” Brandes said. “It’s about the physician-patient relationship — for me, that’s the compelling reason. You hear stories of people struggling, says Brandes.
In addition to keeping the momentum going for medical marijuana legislation, there are medical marijuana event rallies taking place in Tallahassee, Alabama, and Georgia seeking to put legislation on their ballots for medical marijuana and to raise awareness about their cause.
The rallies that are taking place in three different states, are all slated to begin simultaneously on February 10, 2015 at capitals across the south in a united rally for sensible drug reform, and to draft and introduce legislation that allows medical marijuana in those particular states.
Through the efforts of the #OnePlant community on Facebook, founded by James Meissner, he coordinated the rallies as a show of unity among organizations in the south fighting for the repeal of marijuana prohibition. He pushed the idea of the effort and got folks together across the states. His motto is: “#OnePlant advocacy through education and unity.”
We spoke with Meissner, and he stated that there are other states who are having similar rallies in their states.
I called and spoke to Sharon Ravert of PeachTree NORML in Atlanta to get them involved. I am working with MCAA in Alabama, and have recently found out that Louisiana and West Virginia will be joining us in the rally efforts. I am also going to meet the New Orleans folks next Saturday, and then head up to Montgomery in the coming days to help them set up for the event, says Meissner.
Meissner has been an instrumental part in bringing these groups together across the states to rally after the confirmed date for The Grand Rally in Tally was announced for February 10, 2015. The explosion of support for the legalization of medical marijuana and the reform of marijuana laws, indeed, have been far-reaching.
Update: There are now five states that will be rallying simultaneously in February. If you would like to participate in any one of these events, you can join by clicking the buttons below to their Facebook event pages. There will be amazing speakers, patient testimonials, entertainment and most importantly the truth about medical marijuana will be told.
