Worldwide, tobacco use causes nearly 6 million deaths per year, and current trends show that tobacco use will cause more than 8 million deaths annually by 2030.
Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year in the United States, including an estimated 41,000 deaths resulting from secondhand smoke exposure. This is about one in five deaths annually, or 1,300 deaths every day.
On average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers.
If smoking continues at the current rate among U.S. youth, 5.6 million of today’s Americans younger than 18 years of age are expected to die prematurely from a smoking-related illness. This represents about one in every 13 Americans aged 17 years or younger who are alive today.
In 2012, $9.17 billion was spent on advertising and promotion of cigarettes—more than $25 million every day, or more than $1 million every hour.
Smoking costs the United States billions of dollars each year is more than $300 billion a year, including nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults, and more than $156 billion in lost productivity due to premature death and exposure to secondhand smoke.
In 1963, a patent was filed for a “smokeless non-tobacco cigarette,” but the invention did not take off. Fast-forward to 2013, and electronic cigarettes—or e-cigs or vapes, vaporizers, or vaping, as they’re called— has mushroomed into a billion-dollar industry.
Both RJ Reynolds and Philip Morris cigarette companies now have e-cigarette and vape lines. They know exactly how effective e-cigs and the new craze of vaporizing is, and they are the ones who are going to take full advantage of the lack of regulation to put whatever chemicals they want into their products. They are the very same companies that claimed that smoking tobacco was perfectly safe in the 1950’s.
If you are vaping now or considering it in place of smoking cigarettes, be sure that the e-juices or other products that go into the vaporizers is from a reputable company, with the preferred base of e-juice of vegetable glycerin (vg), which is less harsh on the throat than propyl glycol (pg).
If you are a smoker, this is a great way to lessen your health risks of smoking cigarettes. While for now, this is an unregulated industry, vaping is certainly less harmful than the 4,000+ chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins that are found in traditional cigarettes. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT.
Are e-cigs and vaporizers really a safer alternative?
There have been studies emerging using vaporizers in ways that were never meant to be used, such as allowing the vaporized juiced to exceed the recommended heat levels, and e-juices that were from China which contain unsafe levels of in the e-juices themselves.
If one were to get their products from a reputable source such as e-juice in an organic VG form, there have been no issues at all with contaminants.
“Existing evidence indicates that EC use is by far a less harmful alternative to smoking. There is no tobacco and no combustion involved in EC use; therefore, regular vapers may avoid several harmful toxic chemicals that are typically present in the smoke of tobacco cigarettes.
Surveys, clinical, chemistry and toxicology data have often been misrepresented or misinterpreted by health authorities and tobacco regulators, in such a way that the potential for harmful consequences of EC use has been largely exaggerated. It is obvious that some residual risk associated with EC use may be present, but this is probably trivial compared with the devastating consequences of smoking.”
Those who choose to use an e-cig or vaporizer also have the choice to not choose a nicotine based organic e-juice, which is much safer than their nicotine counterparts.
It’s time to start taking proactive steps and say ‘Fuck Big Tobacco’, for the sake of our health and just the simple fact that big corporations are literally getting away with murder from people buying and using their toxic products.
Whether or not you smoke or will be considering switching over to vaping with or without nicotine, or vaping marijuana, there’s no question that vaping has swept across the landscape of many countries and has changed the perceptions and health, for the better, of smokers worldwide.
